Many of the most popular file types these days are actually a variation of a Zip file. ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression.

That is a file that contains many more files within it. Microsoft Office files, LibreOffice, Epub, Mindcraft.jar, Adobe Illustrator files, and many other file formats are just Zip files usually containing media and XML files. You can even edit the name to example.docx.zip, or example.zip. Double clicking it will showing you all of its contents within.
