Best Alternate Software

There is a lot of great commercial software out there from Microsoft, Adobe and others but they can cost many hundreds of dollars. Here are some favorite alternatives to the commercial stuff…

  • LibreOffice – a great alternative to Microsoft Office. This suite of products will do almost anything you want. It includes a word-processor, a presentation program, a spreadsheet creator and much more.
  • GIMP – is an alternative to Adobe PhotoShop. It is capable of doing almost any image editing job you need to do. Like PhotoShop, GIMP is a very complicated tool which requires instruction and practice.
  • Notepad++ is a text editor like MS Notepad but is it is far more capable. The line numbers displayed on the left makes it easy to find a particular section you are working on. Having multiple documents opened in tabs is very convenient.
  • Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. There is on only tool on Windows that I know of that creates media that is capatible to UEFI (similat to BIOS).
  • VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols.
  • Scribus is a desktop publishing program very similar to MS Publisher and Adobe InDesign.
  • darktable is an open source photography workflow application and raw developer very similar to Adobe LightRoom.
  • PDF Creator converts your documents to PDF, JPG, PNG, TIF and more.
  • TeamViewer – Remotely access, manage, and support computers, mobile devices, network machines, and more — from anywhere, anytime.
  • Revo Uninstaller – Clean removal of any program from your PC. Uninstall and remove programs and other unwanted software in Windows
  • InfraRecorder – InfraRecorder is an open-source CD and DVD writing program for Microsoft Windows. First started by Christian Kindahl in the Google Summer of Code 2006, InfraRecorder uses the cdrtools software library to perform the actual burning.
  • Thunderbird – a free email application that’s easy to set up and customize – and it’s loaded with great features
  • Audacity is a free and open-source digital audio editor and recording application software, available for Windows, macOS/OS X and Unix-like operating systems.
  • Handbrake is a free and open-source transcoder for digital video files,
  • 7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver, a utility used to place groups of files within compressed containers known as “archives”. 
  • qBittorrent is a cross-platform free and open-source BitTorrent client.
  • Inkscape is a free and open-source vector graphics editor. This software can be used to create or edit vector graphics such as illustrations, diagrams, line arts, charts, logos and complex paintings.
  • OpenShot is a simple, free and open-source video editor for FreeBSD, Linux, HaikuOS, macOS, and Windows. 
  • VSDC Free Video Editor is a non-linear editing application developed by Flash-Integro, LLC. The program is capable of processing high-resolution footage including 4K UHD, 3D and VR 360-degree videos.
