Last week at the KIPCUG general meeting I said I had not installed Windows 8 on a slow computer and I did not know what would happen with that computer if I did. Today I installed Windows 8 on my old laptop that is literally coming off the hinges and this is what happened:
- The install was quick and effortless.
- After the install it seemed quick and snappy.
- It did not find a few drivers yet most were found when I ran the update driver wizard. I could not update my graphics driver but the default Microsoft driver gave me 1024 x 768 which was good enough for me.
I really haven’t found any significant issues. I thought there might be an issue with the graphics. The spec for Windows 8 is, “DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver”. I don’t know if my graphic device meets that spec but it doesn’t matter because it works. With Windows 7 Aero effects do not work on this laptop with Windows 8 Aero works fine. There is very little drag or lag. I don’t see much difference between the slow and faster machines.
The specs on my old laptop are:
- 1.5 MHz processor
- 1250 MB RAM
- Generic Intel graphics with 64 MB RAM
