Convert Your Old VHS Tapes Cheap


Rather than hire a expensive service you can convert your old VHS tapes to digital files with one piece of inexpensive hardware and free software.


The first thing you will need is a VHS VCR assuming you have one or you can borrow one. Next you will need a USB video capture device. These are very inexpensive and can be purchased on Amazon, B&H Photo, Ebay or Newegg for $20 +/-.


VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility that processes the captured video to AVI a RAW video format. These files can be very large.

The second piece of software Handbrake will convert the AVI and convert it to a compressed format like H.264 so you. These files are a reasonable size that can be placed on YouTube, Facebook and placed in flash-drives for sharing.
