Backing up your phone is imperative for a myriad of reasons. Getting a new phone because you want the latest or you’ve broken it, or your phone is full of apps and files that you’ve downloaded and don’t need anymore all require a backup.

Most Android phones backup your photos and videos automatically (crap Samsung maybe not, preferring their own backup solution). Of course all of the Google cloud applications, (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar) will have a copy as well.
