Back in January we looked at how to use RSS. What we did not cover was where to find media to put in your RSS aggregator. This month that’s what we’re doing. We’re going to learn how to find digital media.

Blogs

How do you find blogs? Google it! You can also go to your regular news sources on the web and they may have a link to their feed.

News

You can get your local news like The Courier Journal Or the New York Times.

Books

You can find free books at the Gutenberg Project and Open Library. These books are all in the public domain. Get other books.

Podcasts

How do you find podcast? Again the answer is Google it! Again you may find feeds on the very sites you visit often.

For video podcast is the same.

The Rest Of Everest is one of my favorite video podcast.

There are free tech podcast on TWiT. Both audio and video. Revision 3 also has both audio and video but with an emphasis on video. There’s also TechPodcasts.com which is a collection of various tech podcasts. Lab Rats is a good program for someone looking for basics of technology.

Audio Books

How do I find audio books?

One free source of free audio books is LibriVox, Audiobooks.org, Podiobooks.com and others.  These books are all in the public domain.

Audio books are also available from Audible and others. Of course these are not free and of course they use copy protection which can make them impossible to play on some devices.

Mediafly

Mediafly is your source for personalized podcasts, news, sports, comedy, pop-culture, and more, delivered to your PC, iPod, PDA, and mobile devices.

YouTube

As with podcast you can find content about any topic on YouTube.

Music

The only place I recommend  to get music downloads is Amazon. Amazon does not tie you up with funny file formats or programs like iTunes that works only sometime. Amazon MP3 downloads are 256k sample rate so there very high quality. They are MP3s so they will play on any device. Amazon is where I get all of my music! You can play them via the Cloud Player.

Hulu

Watch some of your favorite TV programs in your web-browser with Hulu. Some of the programs on Hulu are Dancing With The Stars, House, Glee, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. There are also movies like The Blair Witch Project, Conan The Barbarian and Down from The Mountain. There are many classic and foreign films like Seven Samaria with the great Toshiro Mifune. There are some frequent but short commercials.

You can watch these programs on your TV with Hulu Plus and a device like an X Box 360, Playstation, Wii, Roku Box (my personal favorite) and new Internet enabled Televisions. The experience is pretty much the same on the web but the picture is much smoother.  Hulu Plus is $7.99 per month. It is kinda high considering you still have to watch the commercials. Get a free 1 week trial!

Netflix

Steam movies and TV to your computer or TV with Netflix. Buy now you know about Netflix. Get DVDs sent to your home and return them when your through. Now you can get some of those movies and TV shows streaming from the Internet. You can watch them in your web-browser on your Windows or Apple computer or view them on your TV via a X Box 360, Playstation, Wii game systems, Internet enabled TVs or Roku Box streaming video player. The service starts at $7.99 a month for streaming only and $9.99 and you get one DVD at a time.
